Jumping rope hurts your wrists for three reasons: your arms are turning the rope instead of your wrists, your handles are heavier or longer than the job needs, or you added volume faster than your forearms adapted to it. The rope is rarely the whole cause. The wrong rope makes all three worse.
Where the turn is supposed to come from
Watch someone who has been skipping for years and their arms barely move. The elbows stay close to the ribs, the hands sit a little in front of the hips, and the rope goes round on a small flick of the wrist. Everything above the elbow is holding position, not generating the turn.
Beginners do the opposite. The shoulders swing, the elbows come out wide, and the wrist ends up absorbing a movement it did not start. That is where the ache comes from. It is not the rope weight on its own. It is a joint being asked to finish a movement that began two joints away.
The test is simple. Turn the rope with your eyes closed and pay attention to which part of you is working. If you feel it in the shoulders, the turn is starting in the wrong place.
What the handles do to your wrists
Handle weight matters more than most people expect, because you pay for it on every single rotation. At 120 turns a minute over a ten minute session, that is 1,200 repetitions of whatever your handle weighs.
We build the speed rope handles light and balanced on purpose. Light enough that the wrist can drive the turn, tough enough to survive being smashed into the ground during freestyle, which is why they carry a lifetime handle guarantee. That balance is the point. A handle that is heavy at the far end pulls your wrist through the arc rather than letting you steer it.
Handle length changes the feel too. Our standard handles are 13cm. The long handle ropes are 20cm, which gives you reach for crosses and releases and asks a bit more of the forearm to control. If your wrists are already complaining, the long handles are not where to start.
The heavy ropes are the exception that proves the point. A 10mm cable puts genuine pressure through the wrist, so those handles are shaped for it rather than shaped for speed. If you want the strength work without the wrist load, that shape is doing real work.
Cable weight, and picking the right one
Heavier cable means more resistance on every turn, and that resistance travels straight to the wrist and forearm. There is nothing wrong with that if it is what you came for. It is a problem when you did not mean to sign up for it.
- 5mm PVC over a nylon core is our speed cable. Light, quick, and the default for cardio work.
- 7mm sits between speed and heavy. You feel every rotation without the full load.
- 10mm is the heavy rope. Built for strength sessions, not for twenty minute cardio blocks.
If your wrists hurt and you are training on a heavy rope daily, that is the first thing to change. Alternate it with a lighter cable rather than replacing one with the other.
Why we do not use swivel bearings
Most speed ropes on the market run bearings in the handle. We do not, and it is a deliberate choice rather than a cost saving.
Bearings let the cable spin faster than your hands are actually moving. That sounds like an advantage until you try to control it. What your wrist does and what the rope does stop matching, so you correct, and correcting is extra work for the joint that was already sore. Without bearings the cable turns at the speed you turn it, which is slower on paper and easier on the wrist in practice. Grip pressure
Most people hold the handles far too tight. A hard grip locks the wrist, and a locked wrist cannot flick. Hold the handle firmly enough that it will not fly out of your hand and no firmer. If your knuckles are white, that is your answer.
Sweat makes this worse, because a slippery handle gets squeezed harder. A wristband from the accessories range is a cheap fix for that and it is the reason half of them get bought.
What to change this week
- Drop the hands to hip height and pull the elbows in. Do a full session like that even if it feels cramped.
- Loosen the grip.
- Cut the session in half for a week and add back in small steps.
- Warm the wrists and forearms up first. A couple of minutes of circles and a stretch is enough, and there is a routine in jump rope warm up.
- If you are on a heavy rope every day, alternate it with a lighter one.
When it is not a technique problem
Pain that is sharp rather than achy, pain in one wrist only, numbness or tingling in the fingers, or soreness that is still there after a week off is not something to fix with a different handle. That is worth showing to a physiotherapist or a doctor. Jumping through it is how a small thing becomes a long one.
