A 3.5mm polycord is half a millimetre thicker than the 3mm cord most beaded ropes use. That half millimetre buys two things. The cord is harder to deform. And more of the rope's position comes back through your hands and arms mid-air. It costs you a little speed. For most people learning beaded work, that's the right trade.
This is a specification question with a bad answer online. So the rest of this is what the number refers to and what it changes.
What polycord is, and where a 3.5mm polycord sits
Polycord is the braided line that runs down the middle of a beaded jump rope. You rarely see it. On our beaded ropes a 3.5mm polycord carries 2.5cm PVC beads threaded along its length. The beads are what meet your floor, not the cord.
Which means the cord is doing a different job from a speed cable. A 5mm PVC speed cable is the whole rope. It carries the weight, takes the abrasion and gives you the feel. Polycord carries beads and holds a line. The beads do the rest.
What a 3.5mm polycord changes
Three effects, and they're connected.
- Sturdiness. A thicker cord resists being bent out of line by the beads sliding along it. In a beaded rope the beads load the cord from the inside as it turns. A thinner cord gives more under that.
- Feedback through the hands. This is the one people feel first. Beads catch air and hold their shape through the rotation. What you get back is a clear physical sense of where the rope is. You don't have to look at it. A cord that holds its line more firmly transmits that better. Beginners tend to find rhythm faster as a result, and trip less while they're finding it.
- Speed. Here's the cost. Thicker means slightly slower through the air. We've made the same trade in the other direction elsewhere. The long handle ropes run a thinner 4mm PVC to gain speed for freestyle work. They give up some feedback doing it. Those aren't a first-time jumper's rope for the same reason.
Put simply, a 3.5mm polycord trades a little speed for clearer feedback.
3.5mm polycord vs 3mm: where the 3mm figure came from
3mm is the common figure across the beaded market. It isn't a standard anybody set. Most manufacturers settled on it, and it's a defensible choice. A 3mm cord is lighter and cheaper to make, and marginally faster.
We went to a 3.5mm polycord for a reason about people rather than physics. Most of those picking up a beaded rope are picking it up to learn. Feedback matters more to them than a fractional gain in rotation speed. That's a judgement about who the rope is for. It isn't a claim that half a millimetre is universally better. A competitive freestyler chasing speed might reasonably want the opposite.
Why the numbers online don't agree with each other
Search this question and you'll get millimetre figures that contradict each other. Sometimes within a single page. It isn't unusual to find one number in a product title and a different one in the description underneath. A third turns up in the search snippet for the same product.
Some of that is imperial and metric being mixed. An eighth of an inch is 3.175mm. Five thirty-seconds is 3.97mm. Neither converts to a round metric figure. Pages that quote both end up looking inconsistent even when they aren't.
The rest is that cord thickness gets measured in more than one place. A cord has an outer diameter. Beaded ropes also have a bead bore that the cord passes through. Quote the second and call it the first, and the numbers drift. When we say 3.5mm polycord, we mean the cord.
What it does not change
Worth saying plainly, because thickness gets asked to explain too much.
Cord thickness doesn't set how long a beaded rope lasts. Beads take the floor impact, so the beads are what wear. The surface you train on decides that far more than the cord does. It also doesn't change how you size the rope. A 3.5mm polycord sizes like the rest of our range. The beaded ropes size with a washer system. Our speed ropes use snaplocks instead. Either way it's household scissors and no tools. There's no metal in any of it.
3.5mm polycord or 3mm: which one you want
Ask what you're using the rope for.
- Learning, rhythm, crossovers, first six months. Thicker, so the 3.5mm polycord. The feedback is worth more than the speed at this stage.
- Freestyle at pace, release tricks, competition speed. Thinner cord, or a speed rope entirely. You already know where the rope is.
- Training outdoors on rough ground. Thickness barely matters. Bead quality and your surface matter.
